The Cost of Success

I was in the middle of an identity crisis so I started painting myself. Clever, I know.

I had never painted before, but for some reason I bought some acrylic paint, a few canvases and started experimenting. It quickly became one of the most therapeutic things I could have done.

For the first time in years, I was creating something that didn't need to perform.

No strategy. No algorithm. No carefully constructed caption. No audience to impress. No number at the end of the day telling me whether what I had created was valuable.

I just painted.

And then I painted myself again. And again.

Looking back, I think I was trying to find the person underneath everything I had wrapped my identity around for so long... the work, the roles, the accomplishments, the constant need to be productive and useful.

The Cost of Success came from that strange season between collapse and rebuilding. It's about ambition, identity, and learning that you can be incredibly proud of everything you've accomplished while still questioning what it cost you to get there.

More than anything, it represents the process of finding yourself again when the life that once defined you no longer does.

This is the first piece from that chapter that I've decided to share.
